Durable medical equipment (DME) is any medical equipment used in the home to aid in a better quality of living and keep people out of institutions. DME includes items such as wheelchairs, oxygen equipment and CPAP machines for people with sleep apnea. It is a benefit included in most insurance plans, including Medicare. Beginning in 2011 Medicare began a new program of awarding contracts only to certain suppliers of DME at competitive prices.  The new program has successfully saved money for beneficiaries, their families and the Medicare program.
