11/20/13 02:00 PM EDT    Navigating Changes in Medicare Policy for Home-Based Medical Equipment
Durable medical equipment (DME) is any medical equipment used in the home to aid in a better quality of living and keep people out of institutions. DME includes items such as wheelchairs, oxygen equipment and CPAP machines for people with sleep apnea. It is a benefit included in most insurance plans, including Medicare. Beginning in 2011 Medicare began a new program of awarding contracts only to certain suppliers of DME at competitive prices.  The new program has successfully saved money for beneficiaries, their families and the Medicare program. Tangita Daramola, the Medicare Competitive Acquisition Ombudsman will discuss:
  • Changes and how those enrolled in the Medicare program will obtain their medical equipment supplies going forward
  • Her role in assisting individuals and suppliers with any issues that may arise as a result of the new bidding program.
  • The new National Mail-Order program for diabetic supplies The rights and protections for those enrolled in the program
