Ways to Improve Memory in Seniors

Question: Are there ways for seniors to improve memory?

Answer: Seniors can improve their cognitive function at any age and this includes memory. The old saying "practice makes perfect" is appropriate here as we can all enhance our memory ability by doing memory exercises and by working at memory on a daily basis. In this age of computer technology and mobile devices there are plenty of brain fitness products such as Fitbrains (see where I serve as Chief Scientific Officer. Consider challenging your brain and your memory system on a daily basis with Fitbrains or any type of information that you will process.

We can also use strategies and mnemonics for working on our memory. For example, a common complaint from people is that "I cannot remember names." I have begun using a strategy to remember a person's name in which I will repeat his or her name in every thing I say to him or her after I meet the person. By repeating the person's name in our conversation I am more deeply encoding their name into my memory and this prevents it from decay or erosion.
