Long Term Outcomes of Hepatitis B Infections

by Chari Cohen, Hepatitis B Expert
December 07, 2017

Question: What are the long-term outcomes of hepatitis B infection?

Answer: Over many years, a chronic hepatitis B infection can lead to liver damage, liver failure, cirrhosis or liver cancer. The virus can silently damage the liver over time. This is why it is so important that all people who have hepatitis B are diagnosed and linked with medical care. If someone is at high risk for hepatitis B infection, they should ask their doctor to test them. Managing a hepatitis B infection, taking medication when necessary, and getting screened regularly for liver cancer can save your life!
