Are Braces an Option for Seniors?

by Dr. Joshua Davidson, Senior Dental Care Expert

Question: Are braces an option for seniors?

Answer: Orthodontia, aka “braces”, is a dental specialty that helps move teeth into a more esthetic position. Orthodontic treatment takes time and cannot be rushed; two years on average. Studies do show that if treatment is rushed bone does not grow back to its fullest extent especially in seniors.

Braces are an option for seniors, but be fully aware that the supporting bone structure for the teeth will be slightly compromised after treatment is complete. Another choice for changing your smile is bleaching your teeth. Teeth do discolor over time and bleaching teeth (which will NOT weaken the enamel) can make a world of difference.
