Home Remedies for Toothache

by Dr. Joshua Davidson, Senior Dental Care Expert
December 01, 2016

Question: Can you suggest some home remedies for toothache in seniors?

Answer: My home remedy is get in the car and go to a dentist! All kidding aside, aim for professional help.

The one thing that helps is oil of cloves. Clove oil is a highly aromatic oil and medical writings 2000 years ago suggest this remedy to quell dental pain. The extract can be bought at most drug stores and is a tried and true medicament for deep tooth infection.

Not many other home remedies help. Anbesol just anesthetizes tissue. Hydrogen peroxide won’t help. Heat will make things worse. Room temperature food/liquids are the best to avoid pain flare ups. Taking Ibuprofen (Advil) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can reduce the inflammatory process and help quiet a toothache, but a visit to the dentist is the sure way to address the real issue – infection.
