How do Professional Organizers Tackle Decluttering?

by Vickie Dellaquila, Downsizing & Hoarding Expert

Question: How do professional organizers start the process of decluttering?

Answer: We usually begin the process with a consultation where we will walk through a client’s space and talk about their goals.  During the consultation, we’ll come up with a plan on where to get started.  We typically recommend starting with something easy – likely a space that you don’t spend much time in, like a basement or attic.  Here you may find items that you haven’t used in many years and it may be easier to let them go for that reason.  We usually work in 4-hour sessions or less, which we’ve found seems to be the maximum amount of time for good decision-making, and help our clients to sort items into keep, toss, and donate categories.  If you’re having trouble getting started, try setting a timer for 20 minutes and set up some boxes for each category (again, keep, toss, & donate).  See how far you can get before the timer goes off!
