Devices for Exercise Tracking

Question: My grandfather has to go through extensive physiotherapy with 2 different trainers. Is there a device that can help me keep track of his appointments and results from his exercise regimes?

Answer: No matter what your age is, exercise helps you build muscle, strengthen bones, and improve balance. As people age, they lose muscle and become more susceptible to falls, but exercise can help you reverse that trend – so it is great that your grandfather is going through with his exercises to stay healthy.

Currently, there are a lot of apps/devices to help track exercise and keep you active. I think the key is really to find one that has integrated coaching and feedback which can be helpful for seniors.  For reminders on doctor’s appointments I usually recommend leveraging a digital calendar. Seniors are becoming more engaged with technology than ever and using mobile phones and iPads more frequently, so take advantage of what you have!

If you have a computer at home, I recommend checking out one of Philips’ latest partnerships; Fitness@Home from RespondWell. This offering is an innovative, interactive exercise program.  The exercises are tailored to a senior’s ability and change based on their accomplishments. Throughout the interactive program the users are provided with easy to follow, straight-forward directions to reach their goals and reward their efforts. This is an example of how in home technology can help a senior, or any person gain strength and encouragement to reach their rehabilitation goals all in the comfort of their own home.
