Does Medicaid Assign a Nursing Home When It’s Time?

by David Cutner, Elder Law Expert
May 08, 2015

Question: If I need nursing home care, can I choose the one I want, or will Medicaid assign me to a home?

Answer: You can choose the nursing home that you want, provided of course that the home accepts Medicaid (almost all do) and that it has a bed available for you.

If the home you want has a waiting list, do not be discouraged.  Typically, when beds become available, the waiting list moves very quickly, as many of those ahead of you will likely have found other solutions.

Also, you are not stuck with your initial choice.  You can move at any time to another home when a bed becomes available there.  So, if your first choice is not available when care is needed, stay in touch with Admissions at the home of your choice and tell them you want to move as soon as possible.
