Starting the Process of Home Assessment for Seniors

by Mike Dodd, Home Remodeling Expert
December 06, 2012

Question: How do home-remodeling experts start the process of home assessment?

Answer: Beginning a home assessment is much like setting an appointment with a professional for any other home issue.  It starts with doing a bit of research about who is qualified to conduct the assessment and locating that professional. We rely on our own learned expertise from having performed these in tandem with our own occupational therapists over the years, but having an occupational or physical therapist on site is absolutely invaluable when it comes to making recommendations specific to an individual's diagnosis. Occupational therapists in particular understand the cognitive and sensory issues of patients as they age and as their condition changes.  Designing modifications for the future is a key differentiator to what we do. Contractors simply do not have the type of expertise required to perform those types of evaluations, so having a health care professional as a valued member of the team is a critical element.
