Fixing a Strained Doctor-Patient Relationship

May 17, 2012 10:39AM
Question: My grandmother has been very rude and uncooperative with her doctor and relations between them have strained which, I am afraid, will affect her in the long term. How can I help repair their relationship?

Answer:
Thank you for writing.  Is this behavior typical of your grandmother? If this is a behavior change, your grandmother needs to be assessed.  This may be the early signs of dementia or other neurological issues. If this behavior is typical, it is important to have discussion with grandmother about her behavior. Do not argue with your grandmother; this will only make the situation worse. Express concern; discuss how the doctor is there to help. Also discuss that you want your grandmother to feel well. For example, you may say, “I want you to feel wonderful. Your doctor can help your feel better and that it the reason you need to have a good relationship.” Avoid the word, “you.” For example, do not say, “You better be nice!”

There may be another issue in this situation. There are two sides to every story. Is the doctor doing something that is angering your grandmother?  Is the doctor abrupt with her?  Does she believe she is not getting quality care?  If there is an issue with her doctor, it may be time to find a new doctor
