Importance of Storing Medical Records Online

Question: How important is it to store medical records online?

Answer: For seniors and their caregivers, storing patient records online or in an app can be a great resource. There can be great benefits to using an application where you put all of your information following a doctor’s appointment including: having one place with all health information if you have multiple doctors and specialists; access for others in the care team to help organize and maintain the information; the ability to quickly reference during your next appointment and less papers that you need to hold on to or organize. But there is one important thing that you need to remember before jumping into using one of these services and that is to be consistent with the use. Similar to an activity tracker or other new technologies to help us with our health – you get out what you put into it.

If you are someone who is still working, many organizations offer patient portals or personal health record programs for their employees. If you are retired, don’t worry, there are also many options still out there. As with anything that you are sharing personal information for, please make sure to do your homework and ensure that you feel comfortable with the platform you are using before moving forward with a service.
