How Adult Braces Can Trandform Your Life

Dr. Satish Pai - February 13, 2020 12:00 PM

It is a very common misconception that only kids can wear braces. There is no age limit to going for orthodontic treatment. You can go for corrective measures for teeth at any age provided that your gums and bones that support teeth are strong enough to handle the pressure applied to them.

Today, a huge number of adults are opting for adult braces, even after the age of 40. Yes, teeth straightening for adults is gaining popularity and many have seen some brilliant results, thanks to adult orthodontics. So, if you think it’s too late, you might want to reconsider your options.

But, before you make a decision, you must understand more about orthodontic treatment. So, let’s begin with understanding the types of braces.

Metal Braces

·       Also known as traditional braces, metal braces consist of metal brackets with a metal or rubber wire going through them.

·       They are the most effective at treating extremely overcrowded and crooked teeth.

·       They are the most cost-effective option for teeth straightening and alignment.

Ceramic Braces

·       Also known as clear braces, ceramic braces are similar to metal braces. The brackets are made from tooth-colored ceramic material and are connected through colored rubber wires.

·       Ceramic braces are less painful and also less visible than traditional metal braces.

·       They are very durable but a little more expensive than metal braces.

Lingual Braces

·       Lingual braces have components the same as traditional braces. But the difference is that the brackets are bonded to the back of the teeth, making them nearly invisible.

·       Lingual braces may not be perfect for everyone. For example, people with deep overbites may face problems with lingual braces.

·       Lingual braces are costlier than conventional braces and can be more painful in complex teeth straightening cases.

Invisalign Aligners

·       Invisalign are clear, plastic trays that are custom-made for your bite. The treatment involves wearing a series of trays, as your teeth shift until all your teeth are aligned.

·       Invisalign treatment is the costliest compared to other teeth straightening methods.

·       Though expensive, Invisalign treatment is considered to work faster than other conventional methods.

The Benefits of Getting Braces

Boost Self Confidence – Many people lack the confidence to smile ear to ear because of crooked and overlapped teeth. And, teeth straightening helps them get a straight and beautiful smile which automatically restores their confidence.

Prevents Gum Problems – When teeth overlap, small and tight spaces are created in between them where food particles easily get trapped. And if not cleaned after every meal, these food particles lead to plaque buildup and eventually serious gum problems such as periodontitis. By getting teeth straightened, you can eliminate plaque buildup as well as the risk of gum diseases.

Prevents Erosion of Jawbone – Due to misaligned teeth and plaque buildup, bacteria start eating away at the bones resulting in erosion. With straight teeth, you can avoid this problem.

Improve Your Speech – When teeth are misaligned, they affect your speech which may cause frustration and embarrassment. But when teeth positioning is adjusted, you get clearer and more professional speech.

Decreased Risk of Tooth Injury – If a tooth sticks out due to overcrowding, it is very likely to get damaged if you meet with an accident. By correcting their alignment, you can reduce this risk to a huge extent.

Teeth straightening treatment has been a blessing for us. So, don’t fret. Talk to your orthodontist and discuss together how you can make your orthodontic treatment convenient yet effective.
